Fulvene-metal insertion complexes, obtained by reacting a transition metal-fulvene complex with an unsaturated compound such as a ketone, a thioketone or an imine. A process for the production of fulvene-metal insertion complexes by reacting: (a) a fulvene-metal complex of formula (I) with (b) an unsaturated compound of formula (II): M = a Group IIIb, IVb, Vb or VIb metal, or a lanthanide or actinide metal; A = an anionic ligand, optionally single- or multiple-bridged, other than cyclopentadienyl ligands; X = H, 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy, 6-10C aryl or aryloxy, 2-10C alkenyl, 7-40C aralkyl or alkaryl, 8-40C aralkenyl, 1-10C hydrocarbyl-substituted silyl, halogen or N(R<7>)2; L = a neutral ligand; R<1>-R<6> = H, halogen, cyano, 1-20C alkyl, 1-10C fluoroalkyl or alkoxy, 6-20C aryl, 6-10C fluoroaryl or aryloxy, 2-10C alkenyl or alkynyl, 7-40C aralkyl or alkaryl, 8-40C aralkenyl, 1-10C hydrocarbyl-substituted silyl, 1-10C hydrocarbyl-substituted sulfide group or optionally 1-20C hydrocarbyl-substituted amino, or these groups together with the linking atoms may form one or more 5-10C aliphatic or aromatic ring systems which may also contain one or more hetero atoms (O, N or S); R<7> = H, 1-20C alkyl, 6-20C aryl, 7-40C aralkyl or alkaryl, 1-10C hydrocarbyl-substituted silyl or optionally 1-20C hydrocarbyl-substituted amino; m, p = 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 (from the valency and coordination number of M); k = 1, 2 or 3; (k + m + p) = 1-5 (depending on the state of oxidation of M); n = 0-10; R<8>, R<9> = H, halogen, hydroxyl, 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy, 6-10C aryl or aryloxy, 2-10C alkenyl, 7-40C aralkyl or alkaryl, or amino or imino (both optionally substituted with 1-20C hydrocarbyl groups); Y = N, O, S or NR<10>; R<10> = as for R<8> and R<9>; a, b = 0 or 1 An Independent claim is also included for fulvene-metal insertion complexes obtained by this process.
