To produce a compound woven fabric of fibers (2) together with polymers, a ribbon of bundled fibers is shrouded by a polymer (4). The plastics ribbon with a fiber core is woven into a fabric, which is bonded and pressed by ironing. The polymers are pref. thermoplastics, delivered by an extruder to the fiber bundles, where the fibers are packed tightly together. The fibers are of polyester or glass, or other fiber materials which are not affected by the plastics extrusion. The shrouding polymer material is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide, fluorpolymers, and the like. The polymers contain colored pigments. The coated ribbons are covered by a co-extrusion process, to give two or more shrouding layers round the fiber bundles, in different colors. With a PVC shrouding, the outer layer protects the softener in the PVC. Before the fiber bundles are covered with the extruded shrouding, they are immersed in a polymer emulsion to give a bond between the shrouding and fiber bundles. The fibers are heated by the extruder die land (1) to reduce the temp. difference between the fibers and the extruded polymer. The polymer forming the outer layer can contain mineral platelets, to give a varied optical appearance in the ribbons and the woven fabric. The ironing stage gives a closed fiber/polymer bonding.
