The method involves detecting a gear change request; activating the automatic transmission (24) to disengage the current gear and engage the required gear; pref. after an activation preparation period since detecting the change request, reducing a clutch transfer torque to disengage the clutch (16) and reducing the output torque of the drive assembly (12), whereby the clutch transfer torque is reduced before the output torque of the drive assembly; stopping reducing the clutch transfer torque after reaching a desired torque and pref. holding it at a desired level; and re-engaging the clutch after engaging the desired gear.
