External to the patient, the high voltage generator and controller form a treatment application unit. This includes an interface (12) for a detachable catheter line (3). Data relevant to patient and therapy are entered into the controller. Preferred Features: Data is input into a computer unit (6) connected to the application unit. The control unit feeds, positions and adjusts the catheter head (4) using a step motor and spooling system. A measurement unit is connected, to determine position and/or displacement of the catheter line. An opto-electronic measurement unit is integrated. A coolant reservoir (10) is included in the applicator unit, for the X-ray source. A safety system inactivates the high voltage, should coolant flow cease. A further safety system against high voltage breakdown is included. Shutdown occurs should the voltage or current profile deviate from a norm. A high voltage plug at the HV generator is shrouded, to prevent the danger of inadvertent manual contact. The controller assists planning of treatment, comparing e.g. vessel diameter and stenosis length with values stored in memory, to calculate dose and duration. This facility is integrated into the applicator unit, which is mobile.
