A signal sequence memory stores a sequence of atrium and ventricle sensor (105,107) output signals. Comparators compare the output signal sequence with the stored signal sequence pattern or the number of predefined activities. A shorter refractory time can be set depending on the comparator output. The pacemaker has atrium sensors (107) for detecting electrical activity in the frontal chamber and ventricle sensors (105) for detecting electrical activity in the heart chamber, a refractory switching device (100B) for influencing the processing of atrium sensor signals for a defined period after the appearance of atrium or ventricle sensor signals, a ventricle stimulation device (106) and a stimulation control unit (100A). A signal pattern memory stores a signal sequence pattern reproducing a defined sequence of heart activities or a defined number of predefined activities.
