The invention relates to a method and a device for sorting out consignments. The consignments are individually separated, distribution information is read and required consignment data such as dimensions and weight are recorded. Subsequently, a sorting exit that is already occupied by consignments belonging to the same category as that of the consignment in question and whose sorting container can still receive said consignment is searched for according to a specific sorting plan. If it is not possible to find an appropriate sorting exit, an occupation strategy is searched for among a group of unoccupied sorting exits assigned to said parcel category. The new occupation data is stored and the consignment is conveyed to the sorting exit. Simultaneously, the newly occupied sorting exit is characterized by the consignment category.
