The control system has an object detector (S1), braking devices (4), an arrangement coupled to the detector that determines the probability of a contact between the vehicle and the object based on the relative position derived from the detector output. An automatic braking arrangement (M2) coupled to the probability determination arrangement (M1) performs automatic braking based on the probability determination output. An abnormal road surface state detector (M3) coupled to the automatic braking arrangement detects an abnormal state in which the frictional coefficient is different for the left and right wheels. An increasing gradient for the braking force smaller than that for no abnormal road state is applied if an abnormal state is detected.
