Facsimile device useable away from the domestic environment, i.e. whilst out and about, at low cost

The device is able to function as a printer for a connected computer and is connected to a telephone network via a modulator/demodulator. The facsimile device adopts the modem operating mode in response to a control signal transmitted over the telephone network and passes received data directly into the connected computer. Computer stores data until end of transmission, then switches facsimile to printer operating mode.
