The feed position of the contact wheel (2) relative the work is controlled by a linear drive (12) used to move the wheel holder (11) along line (23) using two-setting power cylinder (8) drive and holder (11) so that the contact wheel bears on the abrasive belt (8) in one cylinder end setting and retracts in the other end setting. This is assisted by a spring (21) located in the drive path between drive and holder so the spring yields against the force acting on the contact wheel (2). The spring is sited between cylinder and holder and is designed as a pneumatic diaphragm cylinder. The two rollers (4,5) straddling the belt run are fixed immovably in the machine frame (3) and an additional return roller (6) acts as a tensioner and moves relative to the frame (3) as dictated by a pneumatic spring having controllable backpressure.
