An antimicrobial agent containing a silver-chloro complex salt, a chloride and an oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite or sodium chlorite, which exhibits an immediate or residual, bacterio- or fungi-cidal or antimicrobial effect against a wide variety of bacteria and fungi and enables instantaneous deodorization; another antimicrobial agent containing a silver-chloro complex salt, a chloride and a compound compatible with a solvent (such as water) in which the chloride is soluble, e.g., an alcohol or surfactant, which conveniently permits simple application at the concentration of storage, does not cause the formation of rust or the deposition of salts in service, and exhibits fast-acting properties and detergency; and another antimicrobial agent containing a silver-chloro complex salt and a chloride having at least either of the property of being able to exist in the form of a supersaturated aqueous solution in the presence of a crystal nucleus at least at room temperature for 24 hours or longer and that of being decomposed when dissolved in water, for example, poly(aluminum chloride) or benzalkonium chloride.
