An apparatus and method for measuring the mass transport properties of porous materials. The apparatus retains a sample of porous material (50) via complementary facing portions (18, 24) that mount the sample in place between their facing surfaces by two clamping plates (14, 16), each facing portion having at least one port (32) passing widthwise plus a longitudinally extending channel (34) together with a flow inlet (38) and outlet (29), each clamping plate contacting its mating portion and having an opening (46) aligned to cover channel (34) on same mating portion (18). In one embodiment, the apparatus is configured for measuring pure diffusion transport properties of the porous material sample [with zero pressure drop maintained across the porous material]. Or the apparatus can be configured for measuring diffusion and convection transport properties of the sample of porous material [with increasing pressure drop applied across porous material]. Or the apparatus can be configured for measuring pure convection transport properties of the porous material sample.
