PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare the subject cosmetic transparent in the visible region, having high ultraviolet screening activity in the UV-A region, little in catalyst activity, excellent in safety, good in feeling in use, and useful as a sunscreen cosmetic or the like by compounding specific silica zinc-oxide composite particles. SOLUTION: This sunscreen cosmetic is compounded with silica zinc-oxide composite particles prepared by combining zinc oxide with amorphous silica so that the content of SiO2 becomes 10-50 wt.% preferably in an amount of 0.1-70 wt.%. The above composite particle can be obtained by adding particulate zinc oxide preferably having an average particle diameter of 0.01-0.04μm to hot water and strongly dispersing to prepare a zinc hydroxide slurry, and adding a sodium silicate solution and a solution of a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid dropwise to the obtained slurry. Further, the composite particles is preferably treated with a fluoride compound or the like for surface treatment. Furthermore, the cosmetic is preferably compounded with an ultraviolet absorbent and/or an ultraviolet dispersant.
