PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an o-phthalaldehyde compound useful as dyes, etc., in improved operability and safety while remarkably reducing the consumption of morpholine and reducing the reagent cost and the load on waste liquid treatment by reacting a xylene compound with morpholine using a specific organic solvent. SOLUTION: The objective compound of formula II (e.g. o-phthalaldehyde) is produced by reacting (A) anα,α,α',α''-tetrahalogeno-o-xylene compound of formula I (X is a halogen; R is a substituent; (n) is 0-4) with (B) morpholine and hydrolyzing the reaction product with an acid using (C) an organic solvent non-reactive with the component B. Preferably, the component A is a compound of formula III and the component C is at least one kind of compound selected from aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and ethers, e.g. toluene.
