PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-2-azetidinone, causing no formation of white crystal containing the same, affording high yield thereof and facilitating its extractive and separatory operations. SOLUTION: This method for producing 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-2-azetidinone comprises the following process: the chlorosulfonyl group is deprotected from 1-chlorosulfOnyl-3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-2-azetidinone and the aimed 3,3,4,4- tetramethyl-2-azetiDinone is extracted from the resulting reaction product using an organic solvent; wherein the reaction product is separated into an aqueous layer and oily layer under an alkaline condition of >= pH 10 followed by adding an organic solvent to the aqueous layer to extract and separate the oily layer contaminated into the aqueous layer under an alkaline condition of >= pH 10 followed by joining the oily layer thus separated with the oily layer obtained above by separation from the reaction product and then the organic solvent in the resultant oily layer is removed to afford the objective 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-2- azetidinone. |
