PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composite particle wherein the whole surface of a nuclear particle is covered with a coating layer to inhibit the particle growth of the coating layer and prevent the generation of a poisoning phenomenon by forming the coating layer comprising zirconia in a specific thickness on the surface of the nuclear particle and adding an alkaline earth element or a rare earth element to the coating layer. SOLUTION: This composite particle is obtained by forming a coating layer comprising zirconia on the surface of a nuclear particle comprising an oxide, a nitride, a silicate, a ceramic, a metal, etc., and having a particle diameter of <=10μm. The coating layer has a thickness of 0.5-50 nm, and contains at least one of an alkaline earth element and a rare earth element. The alkaline earth element or the rare earth element is preferably calcium or yttrium which easily forms a solid solution with the zirconia, and contains in an amount corresponding to about 1/4 of the content of Zr. The composite particles are obtained by adding a zirconium salt solution and an alkaline earth element salt or an rare earth element salt solution to a nuclear particle slurry to deposit the coating layer, and subsequently thermally treating the obtained composite particles.
