PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified polymer excellent in heat resistance, low dielectric constant and solvent resistance by substituting a phenylene group-containing polymer comprising a specific recurring unit by a specific substituent group to a specific degree. SOLUTION: The objective modified phenylene group-containing polymer comprises a recurring structural unit represented by the formula and has a wt. average mol.wt., in terms of polystyrene, of 1,000-1,000,000 and a substitution ratio by a group represented by the formula: C≡C-Z, defined by the following equation, of 0.1-400%. [The substitution ratio by the group represented by the formula: C≡C-Z]=(the total mole number of the group represented by the formula: C≡C-Z in the phenylene group-containing polymer)/(the total mole number of phenylene groups in the phenylene group-containing polymer)×100(%). In the formula, X is O, S, SO2 or the like; R<1> -R<12> are the same or different and are each H, an alkyl or a group represented by the formula: C≡C-Z (wherein Z is H, an alkyl, an aryl or the like) or the like; (n) is 0,1-100 mole %; and (m) is 0-99.9 mole %.
