PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To treat or prevent the initial stage of the degeneration of articular cartilage, etc., in mammals by diagnosing the present or predictable state in mammals in the initial stage of the degeneration of articular cartilage, etc., and by administering a specific compound in a therapeutically effective dose. SOLUTION: Treatment or prophylaxis of the initial stage of the degeneration of articular cartilage or subchondral bone in mammals is conducted by diagnosing the present or predictable state of mammals (pref. cats) requiring treatment against the degeneration of articular or subchondral bone of at least one joint in the initial stage of the degeneration and by administering a cartilage- protecting compound of formula I [R<2> is expressed by formula II; A is OH or the like; X and Y are each H or the like; (n) is 1 or 2; R<6> is a halogen or the like; R<9> is H or the like], its (-) (R) and (+) (S) enantiomers, its therapeutically active and medicinally acceptable salts, prodrugs or metabolites (pref. 6-chloro-α-methyl-9H-carbazol-2-acetic acid).
