Purification of sugar solns - with cation exchange - resins exerting a buffer action and an ion exchange resins

Acid hy drolysis of di- and poly-saccharides is avoided by purifying sugar solns. with a cation-exchange resin (3 pKa 6) exerting a buffer action such that the pH of the sugar soln. is maintained between 3 and 5. The treatment with the cation-exchange resin is pref. followed by a treatment with a weak anion-exchange resin. Major proportions of inorganic cations (esp. di- and poly-valent), coloured substances and other impurities are removed.
