1,262,995. Purification of phenol. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 4 June, 1969 [4 June, 1968; 12 March, 1969], No. 28357/69. Heading C2C. A process for the purification of phenol produced by the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide and containing carbonyl-bearing impurities comprises contacting the phenol at a temperature of 40‹ to 220‹ C. with 0À01 to 2À0% of its weight of a polyamine and subsequently purifying the phenol by distillation, and adding an acid or acid anhydride to the phenol before, during or after the distillation. If the acid or acid anhydride is added before the distillation, about 0À5-10 moles, preferably 2-6 moles of the acid should be added for each mole of polyamine compound. If the acid is added after the distillation the amount of the acid or acid anhydride should preferably be 0À005-0À4% based on the weight of the phenol.
|
