A system and method in which multiple remote transmitters communicate asynchronously with one or more receiving stations. The transmitters are low cost units which use inexpensive timing circuits to generate a pulse position encoded chirp signal which is used to modulate a carrier signal. Upon receipt of the signal at the receiving stations, the signal may be demodulated and decoded using a reference chirp signal which has been locally generated asynchronously to the timing of any of the transmitters. Using a time invariant matched filter, the receiving station obtains the time of arrival of the various transmitted signals and any additional data. |
