PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of exhibiting excellent safety and flame proof characteristics, while keeping advantages of the woody material it coats, and useful for, e.g. construction materials by including a nonhalogen-based organic polymer and hydrophobic organic solvent as the major ingredients, and also by limiting thickness of its film over the woody base and depth of its penetration into the base to specific ranges. SOLUTION: This composition for thin-film, flame proof clear coats is composed of, as the major ingredients, (A) a nonhalogen-based organic polymer [e.g. solid or liquid hydrocarbon resin, alkyd resin or (semi)drying oil, having a softening temperature of 60 to 180 deg.C, the liquid component therefor as the stock solution having a number- average molecular weight of 2,500 to 10,000] and (B) a hydrophobic organic solvent (e.g. kerosene, toluene, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone or butanol), and is spread over a woody base in such a way to have a film of 40μm or less in average thickness thereon and to penetrate into the base to an average depth of 50μm or more from the surface. The preferable component A/component B wt. ratio for the composition is (8/92) to (40/60).
