This invention relates to a method and apparatus for implanting a corneal ring into the peripheral corneal stroma of the eye. The apparatus employed is an annular instrument (20) comprising a hollow body, a handle (21) located at the rear end of the hollow body, and a leading end (22) at the front end of the hollow body. The corneal ring is inserted into the hollow body of the instrument and implanted into the corneal stroma in an encircling relation to the central optic zone of the cornea. After the instrument has been fully inserted into the peripheral corneal stroma, the corneal ring is immobilized and the instrument is removed.
