The arrangement has a wavelength-adjustable laser (2), a polarization-adjusting unit (3) and a control unit (1) on one side of a fiber under test and a polarimeter (5) with an evaluation unit (6) on the other side of the fiber. The Jones matrix formalism can be also used here, by a suitable synchronization of the control unit with the evaluation unit, even if the optical input and output of the object to be measured are spatially separate. The laser (2) is adjustable in wavelength on the transmitting side and is either a laser with an external resonator, or several DFB lasers of different wavelengths, e.g. with usual ITU wavelength and a facility for adjustment regarding the laser temperature. An Independent claim is included for a method for polarization mode dispersion measurement using the arrangement.
