A steel container 1 has a lining of a corrosion resistant and/or heat resistant metal that cannot be welded to steel, the lining being in the form of butt-welded sheets or strips 2, and a composite strip 3 being interposed between each of the butt welds and the container wall, the composite strip comprising a strip of steel plate 4 with a pressed-on face 5 of a material of the same kind as that of the lining, the steel plate having welds 6 along its entire length to the container wall. Preferably the lining is of titanium, zirconium or tantalum. The adjacent inner faces of the lining and of the container are sealed one from another by the welds 6.
