A procedure for controlling a wheel brake that is equipped with an electrically controllable adjusting device (26,28) has a control signal formed to control the wheel brake and output to the adjusting device. The brake force or the brake torque is determined at the wheel brake. Additionally, a measure is determined for the path covered by the brake pad and the control of the wheel brake takes place on the basis of the tendency for change of the force or torque signal over the path. The air gap adjustment of the wheel brake takes place on the basis of one by regard of the tendency for change of the force or torque signal over the path.
