Determining engine speed of motor vehicle

The method involves detecting a measurement signal proportional to the engine revolution rate and determining a proportionality factor corresp. to the ratio between a revolution rate available at the diagnostic interface (4) and the value of the measurement parameter for the same engine speed. The engine's revolution rate is then determined from the measurement parameter and the proportionality factor. The measurement parameter can be inter alia the frequency of the a.c. voltage from the generator.
