The optical disc drive has a laser mounted on an arm that is part of a pivot mounted assembly (18) .The arm (17) is shaped to provide a mounting for the element that has the laser at the tip. A quadrant gear profile (21) is provided as part of the arm structure and this is engaged by a motor driven pinion gear (19). The laser output is focussed by a lens system (20).
