The bogie has an additional wheel set in front of the first and behind the second wheel set, and each is connected to the existing wheel set via a rigid frame. If one wheel of the tandem running gear loses its tire, so that the wheel set is not able to hold the track, the other wheel set on its own holds the track. The bogie remains on the rails. The additional wheel sets float above the rails, so that the wheel flange has constant rail contact but not the wheel tread. Lowering devices lower the floating wheel sets to the rails, so that they can be used for braking high-speed trains or similar purposes.
