In a carding machine a conveyor belt means (13) is positioned to run in close proximity with a doffer roller (12). The conveyor belt means (13) is driven in such a way as to advance at a speed equal to the peripheral speed of the doffer roller (12) so that the doffer roller and the conveyor belt means co-operate to exercise a grip action on the web (11).
