The method involves varying the clamping characteristic in a controlled manner depending on vibrations of the rotary part (2). The transfer function, especially for vibrations generating sound waves, between the rotary part and the shaft bearing (4-6), or parts (7) in contact with the bearing, is varied by varying the clamping characteristic. The characteristic is varied by reversibly altering the radial dimension of a radial adjustment unit containing piezoelectrically active material and an axial adjustment unit containing piezoelectrically active material.
