The vacuum gripper (6) grips the back edge (10) of a sheet (14) guided from a front cylinder from the periphery of a subsequent cylinder, for turning the sheet. The vacuum gripper moves back radially towards the next cylinder and transfers the back edge of the sheet to a further pickup appliance (16). The return movement of the gripper is converted into axial movement by a roller (30a,30b) on the vacuum gripper or by a slide surface cooperating with a sloping support surface (32) on the cylinder.
