1328304 Carbon disulphide; sulphur PROGIL 28 June 1971 [17 July 1970] 30274/71 Heading C1A In a process for the manufacture of CS 2 : (a) a hydrocarbon (e.g. propylene) is reacted with S vapour to form CS 2 and H 2 S, (b) the unreacted S and/or part of the CS 2 may be condensed, (c) the residual gas mixture is contacted with SO 2 (in gaseous, liquid form or in aqueous solution) and water so that H 2 S : SO 2 is greater than 2 : 1 and reacted at a temperature below 120‹ C. and at a pressure sufficient to condense the CS 2 so that the product S (from reaction of H 2 S and SO 2 ) dissolves in the CS 2 , (d) the aqueous phase is separated from the CS 2 and (e) the sulphur in the CS 2 is isolated by distilling off the CS 2 . The aqueous phase from (d) may be recycled to (c). The SO 2 used in (c) may be produced by the burning of the S removed in step (b). |
