PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for recovering a water-soluble halogen-containing carboxylic acid that forms an azeotropic mixture with water in the form of an ester as a useful derivative from an aqueous medium. SOLUTION: A halogen-containing carboxylic acid that dissolves in an aqueous medium and forms an azeotropic mixture with water is allowed to react with an alcohol to form an ester of the carboxylic acid. Then, the ester is recovered by separating it from the aqueous medium. As a halogen-containing carboxylic acid, are cited fluorine-containing carboxylic acids,α-flurocarboxylic acids, perflucro-carboxylic acids, andω-H-perfluorocarboxylic acids.
