PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic signal characteristic judging method capable of mechanically determining the importance to the frequency of each catalog by achieving the comparison with the registered content in the past. SOLUTION: As a method to register the catalog data in the catalog database 20 in which the information of a plurality of signal sources collected in advance is respectively classified by the frequency characteristic information for each signal source, the characteristic distance in the respective frequency characteristic spaces between each frequency of the already registered catalog data and its change in width and each frequency of the catalog data to be newly registered and its change in width are calculated, and it is judged whether or not the frequency of the catalog data to be newly registered is regarded to be same as the frequency of the already registered catalog data according to the characteristic distance. The importance to the frequency of the catalog data to be newly registered and the importance of the frequency of the already registered catalog data are calculated by a comparison and collation processing 6 based on the result of the judgment.
