PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lead-free compsn. which exhibits good durability and melts at a low temp. by incorporating bismuth at a high content and optionally incorporating boron at a low content. SOLUTION: This glass compsn. consists essentially of 40-70 wt. % Bi2 O3 , 24-40 wt.% SiO2 , 0-8 wt.% B2 O3 , 0-5 wt.% Al2 O3 , 0-4 wt.% TiO2 , 0-8 wt.% Na2 O, 0-5 wt.% K2 O, 0-4 wt.% Li2 O and 0-4 wt.% F<-1> . The compsn. is mixed and melted at about 1,000-1,300 deg.C for about 40 min. The molten glass is rapidly cooled and the resultant glass frit is pulverized to obtain a powdery frit of 2-6μm particle size. The powdery glass frit and an oxide pigment component such as CuCrO4 or (Co,Fe) (Fe,Cr)2 O4 are combined with an org. carrier such as rosin, mineral oil, a synthetic or natural resin to prepare a glass enamel paste. This paste is applied on a substrate and bonded by baking at about 500-750 deg.C.
