PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device for reflection type liquid crystal display capable of uniformly illuminating a reflection type liquid crystal display without impairing the portability of a portable electronic apparatus. SOLUTION: The reflection type liquid crystal display 5 is arranged on a reflection plate 6 and a light transmission plate 3 having a light diffusion layer which does not hinder the visibility of the reflection type liquid crystal display 5 is arranged on the reflection type liquid crystal display 5. A light source 4 is arranged on the end face of the light transmission plate 3 and the light from the light source 4 is emitted through the light transmission plate 3 to the reflection type liquid crystal display 5 surface.
