An automatic tracking system for a magnetic recording and/or reproducing apparatus is provided means for varying a phase relationship between a magnetic head and a recording track and for monitoring the level of signals reproduced by a magnetic head at various phase relationships, and means for detecting an optimal point which is centriod of the reproduced signal levels. The automatic tracking system further includes means for controlling a tape feed speed so as to establish the phase relationship of the magnetic head and the recording track, which phase relationship corresponds to an optimal phase relationship.
