PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pointing position detector capable of automatically setting a reference value for automatically and accurately recognizing the image area of an indication image in a display area as a pointing position. SOLUTION: This pointing position detector is provided with a CCD camera 14 for picking up the image of the display area 12 where images are displayed, an automatic reference value setting part 114 for setting the reference value for separating the image area of the indication image included in the display area based on the image pickup signals of the CCD camera 14 and a binarization processing part 112 and a pointing coordinate detection part 116 for comparing the image pickup signal with the reference value, extracting the image area 300 of the indication image and detecting the pointing position.
