High capacity storage tank - esp for pure water using plastic sheeting and porous filling as wall support

The floor and sloping sides of the excavation are sheeted with glass fibre reinforced polyester esp. 2-5 mm thick or with flexible but tough material, e.G. polyethylene 0.8 mm thick, and the volume is filled with a porous bed material esp. clippings of an igneous rock before covered with similar plastic sheeting esp. of the second type. Perforated filer pipes run over the top and similar extraction pipes over the base and vents and level measurement stand pipes are added, all the pipework being of corrosion resistant materal esp. plastic e.g. PVC. The use of filling enables the thickness of the sheeting to be reduced without risk of damage to the side walls by earth movement when the tank is partly emptied.
