The belt 32 advances the cut gauze strips to the applicator roller 13 in association with a presser bar 36 whose surface in contact with the upper run of the conveyor belt 32 is coated with polytetrafluroethylene. The cutting device 18 includes a stationary and movable knife blades 28, 27 severing a width of the gauze G corresponding to the length of the book block spine when a movable platen 19 has pressed an advanced width of the gauze strip G into contact with a downwardly displaceable stripper plate 20 whereby the leading edge of the severed gauze strip is applied against the conveyor run by a presser blade 31 associated with the movable knife blade 27. The severed gauze is stripped off the knife blades by a pin 40 which is driven along the path 42 so that a fresh width of gauze width may be advanced immediately by the feed rollers 16. |
