PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydrogen storage alloy electrode for a nickel-hydrogen battery with the attenuation of the capacity as the cycle elapses suppressed and the rate characteristic improved by dripping a heated and melted hydrogen alloy base metal on a rotating metallic wheel to make it into spheres. SOLUTION: A hydrogen storage alloy rich in Mg components such as Mg, Mg2 Ni and Mg2 Cu is heated, melted and dripped on a rotating water-cooled metallic wheel in an inert gas atmosphere. As a result, a crystalline or amorphous spherical hydrogen storage alloy having a microstructure of <=500 μm grain diameter on the surface is obtained. The electrochemical activity is improved by this spherical alloy powder, the pulverization due to the swelling and contraction because hydrogen is stored and discharged is prevented, hence the service life is prolonged, and the capacity is increased by packing it in a high density. A high-performance nickel-hydrogen battery is composed of a negative electrode with the hydrogen storage alloy as an active material, a positive electrode with nickel oxyhydroxide as the active material and an aq. alkali metal soln. as an electrolyte. |
