PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To markedly improve yield as compared to the case where a specific hafnium compound alone is used as a catalyst by preparing a catalyst composition by blending a catalyst comprising the specific hafnium compound with a specific fluorinated methane sulfonic acid. SOLUTION: The catalyst compsn. for a Friedel-Crafts reaction is prepared by incorporating hafnium trifluoromethane sulfonate Hf(OSO2 CF3 )4 (hereinafter represented by Hf(OTF)4 ) and trifluoromethane sulfonic acid CF3 SO3 H (represented by TfOH). The Friedel-Crafts reaction is widely used as a reaction to introduce alkyl groups, acyl groups, alkoxy groups or the like into the nuclei of aromatic compds. by making the aromatic compds. react with halogenated alkyl, olefin, acid halides or the like. In this case, the compsn. ratio of Hf(OTf)4 to TfOH is not limited, and preferably made to 1:5 to 5:1 molar ratio, more preferably 1:2 to 2:1. |
