Furthermore, if the engine speed rise value DNE is larger than the fuel judgement valueαat the starting time, the engine speed rise upper limit valueβis determined (steps 304, 306), and if the engine speed rise value DNE is larger than the engine speed rise upper limit valueβ, it is judged not to ensure the intake open valve time required to cause the fuel quantity necessary for the starting to flow in the combustion chamber, so that by determining the ignition delay angle collection value FAOP in accordance with the guard-over valueγ(=DNE-β) of the engine speed rise, the starting time ignition timing AST is delayed for angle correction (steps 307-310). This permits the engine speed rise at the starting time to be controlled to the engine speed rise upper limit valueβor less, and the intake open valve time necessary at the starting time can be ensured, thereby permitting the fuel quantity necessary for the continuous combustion to surely flow in the combustion chamber at the low-temperature starting time.
