A reflection surface matrix is introduced into the optical arrangement and parts of it are selectively removed from or added to the beam in order to create the pattern. A method for applying a chosen pattern containing information characters in a material surface (6') uses a laser source (1) to generate a beam (2) which is directed against the surface using an optical arrangement (3-5). The beam is passed through the optical arrangement whilst the pattern is introduced into it. A reflection surface is used to reflect the beam passing through the optical arrangement and the pattern is created by introducing and/or removing selected parts of the reflection surface with respect to the beam. An Independent claim is also included for the pattern forming device, containing a reflective surface formed by a matrix comprising m x n adjacent sub-surfaces.
