1278522 Laying and lifting railway sleepers F PLASSER 4 Sept 1969 [5 Sept 1968] 43819/ 69 Heading E1G Railway sleepers are laid or lifted by a track vehicle having a longitudinally extending conveyor 1, mounted to convey sleepers 3 endwise between a track-borne sleeper transport truck 4 and the track bed, and a device adjacent the lower end of the conveyor 1 to turn sleepers horizontally through 90‹, preferably below previously raised rails 2, the sleeper turning device and conveyor 1 being mounted on an inclined support frame 7, the lower end of which rides on wheels 9 on the track bed and the upper end of which is horizontally pivotally supported on the sleeper transport truck 4. The conveyor 1 is preferably a belt but may be a roller way; the sleeper turning device may comprise, as shown, a turntable 8 which is tiltable to align it with the conveyor 1; or, for laying sleepers only, the device may comprise an inclined quadrant-shaped conveyor having glide rollers (Fig. 3, not shown) on which a sleeper is pivoted about one end. Sleepers are laid on or lifted from the track bed by grippers 5 and passed between the grippers and the turntable 8 by conveyor belts 12 and 13. The upper end of the conveyor 1 is mounted to be displaceable laterally across the support frame 7, and co-operates with a roller way 15 and conveyor belts 16 and 17 for passage of sleepers between the truck 4 and the conveyor 1. The upper end of the support frame 7 is mounted on a turntable 10 on the truck 4 to enable lateral displacement of the lower end. All apparatus on the truck 4 is mounted on a longitudinally displaceable frame 18. Two such vehicles may be used in combination, with their sleeper turning devices facing each other and spaced longitudinally, to perform a lifting and laying operation to replace old sleepers; this operation may be combined with replacing old rails and levelling and packing the ballast. |
