PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a clear light image by improving light shielding accuracy by a light shielding pattern at a liquid crystal device having a structure where the light shielding of a nonsegment area is executed by the light shielding pattern. SOLUTION: In this liquid crystal device having the structure where a liquid crystal 19 is sealed between a pair of substrates 18a and 18b, the voltage applied between a segment electrode 24 and a common electrode 22 is controlled to modulate incident light from a light source 16. A light shielding pattern 28 shields light at the nonsegment area where the segment electrode 24 does not exist. The light shielding pattern 28 and the segment electrode 24 are arranged in a positionally deviated state in accordance with the optical path R of the light from the light source 16.
