The invention relates to a new lateral guidance vehicle system, especially a rail vehicle system, which consists of self-propelled base units that are respectively and essentially comprised of modules (5, 6) of mass-produced bus parts and substantially coupled without any traction force or pressure. Coupling is achieved by means of longitudinally elastic guide members or by dispensing with any form of mechanical coupling, whereby the latter option is achieved using means (21, 22, 23) that guide several base units (10, 16) in stacks. By dispensing with conventional mechanical couplings, the high degree of structural rigidity that is usually required for a rail vehicle in comparison with a road vehicle such as a bus is no longer needed. As a result, measures designed to adapt the construction of mass-produced bus parts to operate on rails are kept to a minimum.
