The heating and air conditioning unit for a vehicle is mounted within a box (12) which is fitted under the floor of the vehicle (S), using removable fittings. Two such boxes may be mounted, one under each front seat position in the vehicle. Each box includes a front air inlet receiving air from duct system leading from the front of the vehicle, and an air outlet supplying treated air to the ducts leading around the vehicle. Each box also includes an evaporator (48) and a heating radiator. The evaporator in the box (12) is connected to a refrigeration circuit (68) contained in the same box (12). The fitting may be made like a drawer, allowing the unit to be withdrawn from the side of the vehicle.
