The device includes a holder member (16a,b) which, during engine start up, arrests the regulator piston (11) relative to the housing (12), depending on the pressure medium. The holder member is located in the pressure chamber (13), which is pressure- charged to move the piston from the basic position into a chosen operating position. One holder member is formed by a peg, which is displaced by oil pressure against a pressure spring. The peg locks into a circumferential groove or a bore in the housing, for locking. A second similar peg is located in a blind hole in the housing.
