A milling machine for camshafts has a compact milling head comprising a drive shaft (55) parallel to the camshaft axis and supporting a milling head (19) which has a width not more than that of the cams and with a radius less than that of any concave section of the cams. The support bearings (57,59) and the drive gears (34) for the milling head shaft are spaced to fit over adjacent cams and are sufficiently narrow not to touch the flanges between the cams. The drive gears are inside housings to protect from grit.
